About the language

Language features

Analytic forms of expressing grammatical meaning predominate in English, and word order is mostly fixed. It belongs to the analytic type of languages. About 70% of its vocabulary consists of borrowed words. Writing based on the Latin alphabet has existed since the 7th century (in the early Middle Ages additional letters were used, but they have fallen out of use). Traditional spellings play a significant role in English orthography.

About us

To avoid possible misunderstandings or even problems in face-to-face meetings and in the course of business correspondence, entrepreneurs turn to the services of interpreters and written translators.

Historically, the English language emerged from the merging of other languages and dialects brought to the eastern coast of Britain by the Angles, Saxons and several other Germanic tribes in the 5th century AD. This is the language now known as Old English.

The Anglo-Saxons were first known as Angles, then came to be called Engles, which gave rise to the word English. A significant number of English words have Latin roots, because in those times Latin was the lingua franca of the Christian Church and of European intellectual life. The language was later also influenced by Old Norse because of the Viking invasions in the 8th and 9th centuries.

Because of the considerable assimilation of various European languages throughout its history, modern English has an impressive vocabulary.

The Oxford English Dictionary lists more than 250,000 different words, not counting numerous technical terms, slang, or words belonging to several parts of speech.

Modern English, sometimes called the first global lingua franca, is the predominant and in some cases even the mandatory international language in:

  • communications,
  • science,
  • information technology,
  • business,
  • aviation,
  • entertainment,
  • radio,
  • diplomacy.
  • Its spread beyond the British Isles began with the rise of the British Empire, and by the end of the 19th century its reach had become truly global. After the British colonization of North America, it became the dominant language in the USA and Canada.

After the Second World War, the growing economic and cultural influence of the USA and its status as a global superpower significantly accelerated the spread of English across the planet.

Knowledge of English has become a mandatory requirement in a number of fields, occupations and professions, such as medicine and computing, as a result of which more than a billion people have begun to speak English at least at a basic level.

Often, especially in the translation of fiction, the subtleties of translation are very significant.

At Kerner, we work with experts who are either native speakers of English or have a very high command of it. They do not simply understand the language, they feel it, and in their translations they pay close attention to the nuances of meaning that words carry depending on how they are used in different contexts, settings, countries and cultural layers.

For example, they would never translate «первый этаж» as “1st floor” for a British reader, and they know when “wicked” is bad and when it is brilliant.
