Dialects:
Four languages are spoken in Spain itself: Spanish (Castilian), Basque, Catalan and Galician, and the provinces also have their own local dialects. The people of the Canary Islands speak Castilian, but it differs from the Castilian spoken in Madrid.
The most widespread language after Castilian, and practically a second official language, is Catalan. Catalans do not quite consider themselves Spaniards, so in their own region they prefer to use their own language in the media, in official paperwork, in business negotiations and so on.
Likewise, the media in the Basque Country persistently use their own language. Valencians, Galicians and Asturians also actively communicate among themselves in their own "official" languages, teach these languages to children in schools and publish newspapers in them.
A very significant Spanish-speaking partner for Russia is the large region of Latin America. Spanish in Latin American countries differs from Castilian Spanish, though not dramatically. Spaniards themselves often cannot immediately understand everything that, for example, Cubans or Argentines say.
